Portrait of Ben outdoors.

About Ben

Triathlon changed my life. Coaching is how I give something back.

I coach because this sport can change more than a finish time. It can improve confidence, physical and mental wellbeing, and what someone believes they are capable of doing.

Why I coach

I want other people to discover what the sport can make possible.

Triathlon gave me challenge, direction, community and a different understanding of what I could do. Coaching is my way of giving something back to the sport that gave me so much.

The most fulfilling moments are seeing an athlete become more confident, understand themselves better and achieve something they once thought was beyond them.

Performance matters. So does enjoying the process, protecting the rest of life and becoming healthier and more capable along the way.

Athlete development

Confidence built through understanding, not blind compliance.

I want an athlete to trust their training without surrendering their voice. Questions, feedback and self-awareness make the coaching relationship stronger.

Understand

Know the purpose of the work and what matters when plans meet real life.

Trust

Recognise growing performance potential without needing every session to be perfect.

Learn

Notice useful signals, communicate honestly and make better decisions.

Pursue

Chase meaningful goals without assuming that more suffering must always be better.

The relationship

A mentor who guides collaboratively.

I treat athletes as I would want to be treated: with honesty, care, useful challenge and a clear reason for the decision.

You should feel that you have a hand on the steering wheel. I listen, invite questions and use your feedback as coaching information. My responsibility is still to decide, explain and be honest when the answer is uncertain.

Professional foundation

Qualified to coach—and responsible for staying current.

Qualifications provide the foundation for judgement, curiosity and continued learning. They do not remove the need for any of them.

The day I stop learning is the day I should stop being a coach.

Coaching experience

Experience across individual, club and group coaching.

I began coaching informally in 2016 and have held formal coaching qualifications from 2020 onwards.

My experience includes approximately a dozen athletes through direct 1:1 relationships and hundreds across clubs and groups. Both environments have shaped how I communicate, observe and decide.

As Chairman of Loughborough Students Triathlon, I led within the sport, supported a team of coaches and contributed informal coaching as I developed.

Athletic experience

Experience in short-distance triathlon and aquathlon.

I remain an active participant because being in the sport matters to me.

My short-distance credentials include two national titles, ten national medals and Great Britain age-group representation in triathlon and aquathlon, including top-ten placings.

Professional network

Knowing when another perspective is needed.

CoachBen is a solo practice, but responsible coaching does not happen in isolation. I am affiliated with Precision Coaching as a named coach and contributor, with access to a wider community of coaches and specialists.

When an athlete needs expertise outside my qualification, I will be honest about the limit and support an appropriate referral.
